The Return of The King ep. 17: Silence in Heaven

“The silence of heaven was never emptiness. It was the calm before the storm.”

– Pastor James Armstrong

This weekend, we studied Revelation 8:1–5, “Silence in Heaven.” As the Lamb opens the seventh seal, heaven suddenly falls silent. Before the trumpet judgments begin, Scripture reveals a holy pause before God moves in judgment and power. In the silence, the prayers of the saints rise before the throne like incense, reminding us that every prayer matters to God.

Key Takeaways

I. Silence Before the Storm — Heaven Pauses (v. 1)
When the seventh seal is opened, heaven becomes silent for about half an hour. This silence reveals the awe, reverence, and weight of what is about to unfold as God prepares to act.

II. The Seven Trumpets Prepared — Judgment Authorized (v. 2)
Seven angels standing before God are given seven trumpets. These trumpets announce the next phase of God’s unfolding judgment upon the earth.

III. The Prayers of the Saints Rise Before God (vv. 3–4)
Another angel offers incense mixed with the prayers of all the saints before the throne. God hears every prayer — not just some, but all of them.

IV. Prayer Is Connected to God’s Purposes (vv. 3–5)
The same altar that received the prayers becomes the source of the fire thrown to the earth. Revelation shows us that the prayers of God’s people are woven into His sovereign plan.

V. God Hears, Waits, and Acts Perfectly (v. 5)
Thunder, lightning, rumblings, and an earthquake follow as heaven’s silence breaks. God’s timing is never late, and His actions are always purposeful and precise.
