The Return of The King ep. 6: The Church That Tolerates Jezebel

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

-Dietrich Bonhoeffer

This past weekend, we turned to Jesus’ sobering words to the church in Thyatira and heard His call to a people who had grown comfortable with compromise. In Revelation 2:18–29, Christ, whose eyes blaze with holy fire, commended their love and perseverance but confronted their tolerance of false teaching symbolized by Jezebel. We were reminded that unchecked compromise slowly reshapes our hearts, and that true love for Christ refuses to coexist with what dishonors Him. In both warning and promise, Jesus revealed His desire not to condemn but to purify His church, inviting us to hold fast to what is true until He comes.

Key Takeaways

Love and compromise cannot share the same throne. Genuine devotion to Christ requires discernment and courage to reject what pulls our hearts away from Him.

Tolerance of sin weakens our witness. What we allow to remain unchecked will eventually shape our character and influence our community.

Jesus disciplines those He loves. His correction is not rejection but mercy, calling us back to holiness and deeper fellowship with Him.
